Hill Village           <previous next>

Site: Foothills west of Williams, California

Program: A new type of development to help accommodate the projected 14 million persons who will be absorbed by the Great Valley by the year 2040.

Solution:

Environmental/Ecological Factors

The Hill Village Project reflects a desire for eco-village urbanism. Green building practices used in the design proposal’s hillside villages conserve natural resources, including agricultural land, by creating walkable satellite villages in the foothills.

Mixed-Use Fabric

The range of housing sizes and configurations accomodates a range of families and incomes, from the extended family of farmers to single telecommuters. Unlike a neighborhood of detached houses, the repetition of mixed-use buildings in a hill village is more socially unified and compact on the exterior, while the interiors allow for more private configurations based on need.

Implementation/Phasing

The design charette is the way to get the best results in a short period of time. For each hill village a core group would put together a project plan for a specific site, which could be constructed over a span of 25 years.
