Beach House transforms the New England beach house from the image of historic architecture into a more spatially engaging concept. Certain liberties are required in order to unblock the opaque and orderly 'Cape' typology. Continuous glass at the ground level allows space to be animated by panoramic ocean views beneath a ceiling derived from multiple sources: clouds, dunes, seashells.
The upper level is more sheltered, containing the private, 'traditional' spaces. Window openings allow shifting shafts of sunlight to penetrate. The window locations are specified according to interior phenomena instead of an exterior image of orderliness.
Exterior walls and the roof are clad in wood shingles that will weather over time. The overall form is abstract yet makes split references to both New England building traditions and to forms found in nature. |
