Amherst Arcade       <previous next>

Site: The pedestrian pass-through that connects the Amherst central parking lot with the town hall and green.

Program: An architectural installation that will convert the "tunnel" into an experimental performance space.

Solution: In response to the site context and emergent digital culture, a picture of downtown Amherst is digitally morphed into a 3-d model, which is then re-scaled to fit parametrically onto the existing building walls. Production consists of CNC prepared molds for polychrome fiberglass shells that are attached to aluminum frames. Holographic animations are projected into the space, framing a phantasmagoric experience. This spectacle is deployed to entice the public to explore, just like the alluring "panoramas" of 19th century Paris arcades invited the masses.
